It’s a safe assumption to say Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are one of the greatest female comedy duos (If not the best) of all time. From their days on SNL anchoring the first all female “Weekend Update” to the big screen with their film Baby Mama, the two have a natural chemistry with each other. Their humor is on the same wave length allowing the two actresses to play off one another creating comedy gold. That’s why it’s such a disappointment that their new collaboration Sisters doesn’t deliver the laughs like it should.
Sisters actually had a promising concept that would be very conducive to delivering the funny we expect from Fey and Poehler. The Ellis Sisters return home to Orlando to clean out their rooms of their childhood home now that their parents (Played by James Brolin and Dianne Wiest) have sold it. Poehler plays Maura, the straight-laced and Momma hen of the two while Fey plays Kate, the hot-tempered single mom who’s still down for a party. The sisters decide to throw one final bash with all their old friends from High School which predictably gets out of hand.
The idea of 40 plus adults throwing down like they were seniors in High School seems like a funny idea, but most of the jokes miss their marks or drag out the punchline for far too long. Many times during Sisters a good joke is ruined by beating the gag into the ground where it just becomes annoying. The laughs are just played out, which is not something you would expect from Tina Fey who is one of our great comedic minds in Hollywood.
Poehler and Fey spend too much time separated during the party scenes not allowing the audience to enjoy their instinctive comedy timing together. Sisters should have been funnier with its R rated humor and especially with these two immense comedic talents like Fey and Poehler involved. Instead we are left with lame jokes that aren’t edgy and two characters we don’t really care about due to a lack of depth even by comedy standards.
Overall, I give Sisters 2 out of 4 stars.
